Brain Fog After 40: Why You Can't Think Clearly Any More

You walk into a room and forget why you came in. You read the same email three times and still couldn't tell anyone what it said.

A name you have known for twenty years sits on the tip of your tongue and simply won't come.

And in the meeting, the woman everyone relies on for the sharp answer is quietly hoping nobody asks her anything.

If that sounds like you, I want to say something before anything else. You are not losing it. You are not getting lazy. And you don't have to accept it as "just what happens after 40."

What brain fog actually feels like

It rarely arrives with a bang. It creeps in.

You are far from alone. In a 2025 survey, almost half of Irish adults (49%) said they wake up tired most days. And a tired body makes for a foggy mind.

Why it is not your fault

Most women I meet have already done the sensible things. They've had their bloods done. Normal. They've been told to sleep more, stress less, and maybe it's just their age.

So they come to the only conclusion left: it must be me.

Here is how I've come to see it. You were never meant to run on full power all day, every day, for years. Your body is meant to recover. To let go of the strain of the day and come back to itself.

But years of early starts, full diaries, looking after everyone and pushing through can wear that rhythm down. Nothing crashes. It just starts to feel as if your recovery signal has gone quiet. Slowly, and without any drama.

For a lot of women, the head is where they notice it first. The HSE lists forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating among the common signs of stress, and poor sleep makes concentration harder too. For a woman who leads a team or runs a business, that is not a small thing.

The fog is not a flaw in your character. It is a signal worth listening to.

Why trying harder makes it worse

When we can't think clearly, we do what has always worked. We push harder. Another coffee. A later night to catch up. One more list.

But pushing harder draws on the same empty account. It rarely gives you your clarity back.

What changed for me

I know this from the inside. For over 15 years I lived with chronic pain and broken sleep. I ran on fumes and called it normal. The fog was part of it. I would lose the thread in the middle of a sentence and cover it with a smile.

What changed things for me wasn't trying harder. It was a gentle, natural method from Germany: small, light reflection plates placed on the skin, and a simple plan to follow at home. No medication. No surgery.

Over time, my sleep deepened, my pain eased, and my head cleared. That is my own experience. Every body is different, so I can't promise yours will be the same. But I can promise you this: the fog is not who you are.

Three things you can do this week

Find your clearest hour. Most of us have one window in the day when our head is sharpest. Protect it for your hardest thinking. Don't spend it on emails.

Give yourself one real pause a day. Ten minutes. No phone, no podcast, no input. Not as a reward. As maintenance.

Stop blaming yourself out loud. "I'm so scattered" becomes "I need recovery." The words you use about yourself matter more than you think.

Wondering whether it's menopause? I've written about that too: Is It Menopause, or Is It Burnout?

Where to start, including from your own kitchen

Most women start with the Active Programme. One session where I show you exactly what to do, then one month of home training you run yourself. Small light plates placed on the skin for a few hours a day. No medication, no equipment to buy, nothing to swallow. The plates are loaned to you as part of the programme and come back to me at the end. It is €195.

You can do all of it online. The session runs as a live video call, in English or German, and the plates are posted to you. If you would rather come in person, my studios are in Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare and in Limerick City.

If you would like to talk it through first

I offer a free 15 minute Clarity Call. No charge, and no pitch. We talk about what is actually happening for you, what you have already tried, and whether this is likely to be any use to you. If it is not right for you, I will say so plainly, and I will tell you what I would look at instead.

You leave the call with a clear picture either way. That is the whole point of it.

The fog is not who you are. It is a signal, and signals can be answered.

If your brain fog came on suddenly, is getting worse, or comes with other symptoms, please see your GP first. If someone becomes suddenly confused, call 999 or 112.
